Classical Music Is Now Being Used To Calm Dogs–With Proven Results!
Have you ever stopped and wondered if your dog may not like your choice in music? Or, better still, that there may be music out there that would calm him down, and even make training easier?
Over the years, researchers have done just that. And, thanks to them, we know have the answers to these questions, which could change your dog’s life (for the better) and may even help you with training.
Lisa Spector is co-founder of Through a Dog’s Ear, an animal music program created by BARD (BioAcoustic Research & Development) to provide audio programs specifically for the health, well-being and longevity of animals.
Spector’s credentials include being a graduate of Juilliard and an award-winning concert pianist. In addition, she is a canine music expert, agility enthusiast and a former puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind. While developing their music, Spector and her co-founder Joshua Leeds, consulted with veterinarians, animal behaviorists and trainers.
Currently, Spector runs a shelter program, “Music in Shelters,” where she donated CDs of herself piano that are now being played in over 1,500 shelters worldwide. She told iHeartDogs.com:
“The donated music is helping increase adoption rates in over 1,500 shelters worldwide for several reasons. One is that it helps keeps dogs quiet. The peaceful environment encourages visitors to stay longer and then adoption rates increase. It’s also sent home with dogs with behavioral challenges. Trainers often work with new adoptees – using the music to ensure their new home is their forever home.”
Watch the below video of her CD in action at the Sante Fe Animal Shelter:
We interviewed Spector to learn more about music for dogs and its applications for pet parents.
What made you get involved in music for dogs?
LS: I’ve always been a dog lover, and in 2003 I was a volunteer puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Professionally, I was performing as a concert pianist and owned a music school. As a teacher, I went to a seminar taught by sound researcher Joshua Leeds and learned about the principles of psychoacoustics – the study of how sound and music affects the human nervous system. I learned how to calm and focus a class of 4-year-olds in 30 seconds flat with the right prescription of music. I also noticed that this same music had a profound effect at calming my rambunctious Guide Dog pup. I went back to Joshua and asked if he’d ever considered creating music for our beloved 4-legged friends.
We then discovered that a little bit of research had been done on the topic by Irish behaviorist Deborah Wells. But, there was much more to be done. A veterinary neurologist took interest in our idea and ran a clinical research testing over 150 dogs with four hours of classical music we had recorded, including the slowed down, simplified psychoacoustic arrangements we had created. In summary:
- In the kennel environment, over 70 percent of the dogs became calmer with the simplified, 50-60 beats per minute (bpm) — both solo piano and trio music.
- In the home environment, the solo piano at 50-60 bpm showed an average of 85 percent becoming calm, and over half the dogs went to sleep.
This lead to the launch of our first recording in 2008 by Through a Dog’s Ear… Music to Calm Your Canine Companion Vol. 1. It includes the slowed down simplified classical arrangements discussed here.

Can you explain Dr. Alfred Tomatis’s research, which you also used while developing your music?
LS: Dr. Alfred Tomatis (1920-2001) was an internationally known ear, nose, and throat doctor, and inventor. His alternative medicine theories of hearing and listening are known as the Tomatis Method. His work is used in neurodevelopment clinics world-wide for the treatment of autism, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, etc.
He believed that sound is a nutrient; we can either ‘charge’ or ‘discharge’ the nervous system with sound. Tomatis-inspired techniques – using high or low tones, fast or slow tempos, and easily identified patterns – informs the recordings of Through a Dog’s (and Cat’s) Ear.
What makes the music for dogs different from other music?
LS: We make three changes to classical music:
- Slowed down tempos to 50 to 60 (bpm) beats per minute
- Lowered frequencies that calm the canine nervous system
- Simplified patterns that take listeners from active listening to passive hearing
We use piano as it’s a solo instrument with easily includes low frequencies that help calm the canine nervous system.
In summary, through the use of tone, tempo, and pattern identification, we are able to speed up or slow down primary pulse systems of the mammalian body (rain waves, heart rate, and breath). This is especially useful for canine and feline anxiety reduction.
Anything you stay away from (noises dog’s don’t like)?
LS: We stay away from high frequency ranges that charge or excite the canine nervous system.
Do you think there are other uses for music for dogs other than calming and separation anxiety? For example they say classical music helps people study…do you think having music on while training a dog could help them focus?
LS: In our original testing, we actually tested music designed for mind alert/ body relaxed (for humans). We had thought that would be most effective in the training environment. However, trainers tell us over and over that the simplified psychoacoustic arrangements are so effective at helping dogs focus. And then training is so much easier. They love to play it during classes, because calm gets transferred down the other end of the leash and it also calms the people as well. That is particularly helpful in a classroom with reactive dogs, since dogs pick up our energy so quickly.
The iCalmDog
When I worked at a doggy daycare, I saw firsthand the affect of music on dogs. It was interesting to see a room of 30-40 barking crazy dogs get quiet when the rock, rap, even pop music was switched to a CD similar to Through A Dog’s Ears.
So, now that you are completely convinced that your dog needs calming music in his life (and you should be!), you maybe wondering how you can take that music with you on the road, for say, training at a park? Or maybe at the vet’s office (another place of high anxiety)?
Through a Dog’s Ear just launched their new iCalmDog 2.0, which is a portable music device for your dog!
People enjoy their music on their mobile devices,” says Spector, “Now, there is a way for Buster to carry his clinically tested calming canine tunes with him to the vet, groomer, dog sitter, etc. People are telling us that their dogs are so happy to have their own iPawd.”

Monster Attempts To Kill Dog, But A Shocking Twist Of Fate Finds Her A Forever Home
We want to warn you, what you are about to read might make you angry inside, but we PROMISE there is a very happy ending that will turn your anger into happiness very quickly. Diamond Owens is NOT a nice person, she is someone who committed an unspeakable act, BUT karma was there to swiftly serve her with a healthy dose of justice.
After she claims her dog “had to go” for “biting her boyfriend several times,” Diamond disposed of the dog like a piece of trash–IN THE DUMPSTER–just outside of her apartment complex in Copley, Ohio. But that’s not before she tried to break it’s neck to kill it. In her mind the dog needed to be euthanized, but she “didn’t have the money to do it” so she did something only a monster could do.
BUT, what she didn’t know, the tiny less than one year old Chihuahua was still breathing, clinging onto life when a maintenance worker discovered her. She was taken to a local animal hospital to receive veterinary care, and this is when one police officer, Chris Santimarino, instantly fell in love with this sweet little dog who looked like she’d never even hurt a fly.
“She’s smiling, she does that, and now… she’s a part of our family.”
Just as the old saying goes, one person’s trash may be another one’s treasure. Owens received 180 days in jail, and will have felony animal abuse charges on her permanent record for the rest of her life. (But if you ask me, that’s simply not enough for what she’s done!!)
We are SO THANKFUL that little Honey is getting to spread her sweetness in a loving home, just like she deserves. And as you can see, a dog’s gentle and kind spirit will never be broken–no matter what!!

Chipmunks at Home
I was greeted at the door when I got home a little subdued by a dog. It looked like he may be guilty of something. Thinking that I had to go immediately, I opened the door for him. He took a hesitant step in the closed area and urinated for a short time, then came back in less than a minute.
As thought, his bladder was not as good as it used to be, he must have peed in the house somewhere. I thought I could feel pee, but where. I wanted to clean up as soon as possible, so that there would be no stains on the carpet. I'm completely wrong, thinking it would help me find a place like pee it only put the sofa to watch in the hallway.
My house was not so great, should not take much time, but when looking for a damp place, which tend to use their limited sense that the sense of sight. Barefoot is needed in these situations. I felt all that seemed as if all the main floor and was about to go to the basement when I saw a small child running along the corridor. Kona looked at me and then in the direction of the track of what we have seen and then looked at me again. "Well, what should we do about it?"
Not knowing what exactly what I just saw, I froze for a few minutes in the hope of seeing him again. l was in the direction I saw him running like Kona now lead the way. He was in the room, but wait, there was another that crossed the aisle in the House race and another followed.
"What's going on here?" I said aloud, "What is that?"
I turned to the room saw another in the corner of the closet.
"It's a squirrel!" I whispered
Everything made sense to me now, how Kona acted guilty, short pee, eyes in the lobby. She knew what was going on and was probably entertained all day by squirrels.
I called the exterminator and within two hours they had at least 3 small pots sitting in my house. Kona sniffed squirrels and the destroyer would catch them. He basically let a squirrel has a bit of space and then cut off his escape route. For example, when we were behind the sofa, he pinched one hand and the squirrel would have to run to the other end. At the other extreme would be a waiting cage.
In the squirrel came down the hatch. As the destroyer left the house, Kona sniffed enthusiastically around the stove. "It seems that your dog has found a little more," he said.
The summit came out relatively easy and of course there were 2 other squirrels crawling on the hot pan.
In total, we found six squirrels in my house that day on May 2 never found, though there was little sense of smell of man's best friend.
Why Hire a Dog Walker?
Dogs, like humans, are social animals and need daily exercise and stimulation. I became a dog walker and own my own business walking the dog and pet sitting, I saw how a lack of daily exercise and stimulation has negatively affected our furry best friends. Yesterday I took our Addison dog, a labrador seven years, to the vet for a checkup and I saw a great example of a dog that could benefit greatly from a dog walker.
I sit in the waiting room of the vet clinic, veterinary technician while listening to an elderly couple told dachshund that had gained weight. Now, dachshunds have small legs and excess body weight for this type of race is very difficult for them. The veterinary technician proceeded to tell your dog weighs 26. They both looked at each other and accused each other of not exercising the dog and chicken feeding dogs and other remains of the dinner table. Just look at this little dog broke my heart because his stomach was almost dragging on the ground and gasped.
This was an extreme example of how lack of exercise, overeating, and lack of mental stimulation can take your dog is bored and overweight. Being a dog owner and dog walker myself, I realize the huge responsibility of keeping a dog healthy and happy.
We all live busy lives and usually say, but if you work long hours and can not give your dog the attention it deserves, it is advisable to look into a professional company, bonded and insured dog walking in your area. A large number of companies offering walking dogs give discounts if you have your dog walked 4 or more times a week. Just call and discuss your situation to see if they can meet your needs
3 Tips To Be A Good Pack Leader
Why is it important to go to the head of the pack in dog training?
You will find that your dogs have behavior problems such as barking dogs and other biting your pet? In these cases, it is likely that your dog thinks he is the leader of the pack, or perhaps he is just confused about it.
But talking about the nature of dogs (are pack animals!) Once you (the teacher) to show the direction the dog is actually more than happy to be a follower!
Here I would like to share some tips to develop to be the leader of the pack!
Tip # 1: Take full control of their supply agreements
Your dog will not eat until you drop. Be strict and finally he realized: If I'm not going to have food! Knowing that the food is still the "ultimate" goal for each dog, if you can show that you are in control of your meal, there is no way that can not be listening to you. Note that you must control not only when out food, but also where feed them and feed them when they are well behaved!
Tip # 2: Stand firm during dog training
Note that aggressive assertive is different. Talk to your dog gently but firmly. Do not talk about cute way or anger. If you know your dog ignores you on purpose, first stop and come back later. Do not yell at your dog. Most of the time, it is useless to shout, but only injured. In fact, they can feel our love for them. Likewise, they may also feel if we let them do whatever they want. Training dogs ... it is a matter of their discipline training too!
Tip 3: Know your package
We all love our dogs, right? Understand and love them. Only when you know your package and what satisfies them, while the balance is created. From there, we can do the dog training plan more effectively. It is like the teamwork in our workplace. You have to understand the personality of everyone before you can really blend well with them. Balancing the pack with their knowledge in dog training!
This is the fundamental and essential dog training SUPER. Many people say that dog training is difficult. But believe me, the key is - to be the leader of the pack!

5 Top Tricks to Finding the Best Dog Insurance
Is not that what concerns us all face, taking into account the rising cost of veterinary care, and the chance of illness or unexpected accidents? Your friend Boomer could lick antifreeze, running down the street, or be attacked by an infected tick-Lyme, and their savings could evaporate. Or worse.
Maybe you've thought about pet insurance, but I did not know the place to start. Some basic guidelines allow you to compare different plans out there to get the best dog insurance for you and Boomer agreed.
Tip # 1: Know what you want insurance for your dog
The best dog insurance will provide medical care for your dog while protecting your ability to pay the bill. Although there is no pet insurance policy pays 100% of the veterinary costs, reimbursement is proposed could make the difference.
Before starting the research, writing specific information about your dog. Race, age, current health status, date of last visit to the vet, activity level, and any genetic or recurrent disease are important in finding insurance for dogs.
It's also a good idea to know what is currently spent on routine veterinary care, drugs and unannounced visits to the vet. Add the total value of the costs of veterinary one year so that you can compare this amount to the cost of dog insurance.
Tip # 2: Find people who know the best dog INSURANCE
Talk to at least two veterinarians, maybe more. Ask them about their experiences with pet insurance. Most plans reimburse instead of paying the vet. But whether your local veterinarians believe that it is the best dog insurance.
You can also contact a multi-specialty veterinary practice and the emergency clinic. These professionals can provide estimates for major interventions may still did not face. The best dog insurance is designed to help pay for this type of event.
Other sources of information on insurance for your dog are other dog owners, dog breeder, and even a local club. You can find someone with first-hand experience with dog insurance that can give you a good idea of what to expect.
Tip # 3: Understand the options of insurance plans DOG
There are several types of dog insurance plans. Some accident and emergency coverage, while others will pay for routine veterinary care. Drugs can be included in the basic plan and offered at an additional cost.
Find insurance plan for pets that reimburses a percentage of the total mass veterinarian. Some plans only cover costs "usual and customary", which are averages collected by the insurance company. This is often much less than you will pay the vet.
Tip 4: Even the best dog insurance has no limits AND DISCLAIMERS
Each plan insurance deductibles pet, copays and limitations of the policy. The best dog insurance has deductibles and annual limits what if your dog is sicker than once a year, these limits do not occur every time you go to the vet. You can choose the percentage share that works best for you.
Two of the most important factors of dog insurance are pre-existing illness exclusions specific breed. If your dog has been treated recently, most pet insurance plans will not pay for treatment with the diagnosis for a certain period of time.
Unfortunately, some dog breeds have genetic or hereditary health problems may require veterinary care than other breeds. His first choice of dog insurance plan can exclude your dog if it is one of those races. There may also have exclusions for older dogs or those with chronic diseases (such as allergies). Make sure you look carefully all exclusions.
Tip # 5: decide that INSURANCE PLAN DOG IS THE BEST FOR YOU
Choosing the best dog insurance plan can be a difficult decision. Balance the needs of your dog's health plan options and the total cost per year. You may be more willing to pay out of pocket for routine care to pay a higher premium each month. Or you may want the security of knowing that pet insurance will help pay for all veterinary care of your dog.
It may be quite possible can conclude that there is no better dog insurance policy for you. When you have enough money to cover illness or injury worst case, this may be the right choice for you.
However you choose, you'll know you've done everything possible to ensure the health of your best friend. And you will have peace of mind that will never be obliged to put a price on his affection.
Top Dog Insurance Considerations
Do I have the financial resources to cover a large vet bill if my dog is injured or sick?
This is the main consideration dog insurance. If your pet becomes seriously ill or is injured in an accident, vet bills can easily add up to thousands of dollars. If you do not have the means to pay for treatment, you might consider a dog health insurance. You must be aware of the details of your health insurance policy for pets, since many of them require you to be a deductible or pay the entire bill and wait for the insurance company to reimburse you. Many dog owners choose to simply put your money in a savings account instead, since money can earn interest and be used for any needs that your pet may have.
Do I have a dog at high risk?
Many breeds have a higher risk for certain genetic diseases or conditions. Weimaraners and German shepherds, for example, have a good chance of developing hip dysplasia as they age. This is a painful condition and potentially costly. Note that insurance policies do not cover many specific genetic requirements racing dogs like this, so you want to read the exclusions of any policy carefully before you decide to buy.
Your dogs temperament can also be a factor. If you have a very nervous puppy or a dog that likes to bite strange things, higher insurance policies for dogs can cover treatment for accidental injury or surgery may be needed to remove a foreign object Fido stomach. This happens more often than you think, and the bill for intestinal surgery can easily reach $ 4,000 or more.
How old is my dog?
As health insurance for humans, insurance premiums generally increase dog as a dog ages. If you have a young puppy healthy, you can simply choose to enroll in a discount program. This is usually one of the cheapest types of health insurance for pets, and simply receive a membership card that may have discounts on regular checkups, vaccinations and other services covered.
Older dogs may have more serious health concerns, and it is important to know that many of the best dog insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. If your dog has never been treated by a health problem in the past, you have to wonder if this particular condition will be covered by the insurance policy. Otherwise, you might be better to use this savings account to cover vet bills.
My dog never been abused or neglected?
Unfortunately, many animals are abused or neglected every day, and this can sometimes have a major impact on the health of the animal. If you adopted your dog shelter or rescue organization, it is important to know as much as possible about the conditions of previous dog's life. The dogs were severely malnourished or abused may be at greater risk of health problems that can not happen until much later. If you have a dog that has never been in a situation like that, you can take a dog premium insurance policy for at least a couple of years, just to be sure.
Each animal is different, and your dog may have additional considerations that make dog health insurance a good choice for you. If you decide to buy a dog insurance policy, read the fine print to make sure you are getting the coverage you need your pet. Large dogs insurance companies must be prepared to answer any questions you have about their policies, and you should get quotes from more than one vendor to make sure you get the best deal for your money.
